Dress Code

A reference for cotillion classes, dances, events, and other invitations:

JUNIOR COTILLION CLASS ATTIRE (for 6th and 7th grade classes)

Gentlemen: Suit or jacket and tie, with khakis or dress trousers, dress shirt, dress socks, and dress shoes.

Ladies: Knee length dress or knee length skirt and shirt, dress shoes (low heels) with a strap or closed back. Wrist length white gloves are optional. (We always have gloves available to borrow.)

WINTER DANCE ATTIRE (Grades 6 &7)

Gentlemen: Suit or jacket and tie, with khakis or dress trousers, white shirt, dress socks, and dress shoes.

Ladies: Modest, age appropriate, knee length or longer, holiday or ‘cocktail’ dress, dressy separates, dress shoes (low heels), wrist length white gloves (optional). 
*No strapless dresses or dresses with trains, please.

SPRING BALL ATTIRE (Grades 6 & 7)

Gentlemen: Tuxedo, suit, or jacket and tie, with khakis or dress trousers, white shirt, dress socks, and dress shoes.

Ladies: Modest, age appropriate, knee length or longer,  white or pastel ‘cocktail’ dress, dressy separates, dress shoes (low heels), wrist length white gloves (optional). *No strapless dresses or dresses with trains, please.

 WEEKEND CASUAL

*This is the lowest level of dress and is not included in Emily Post’s list as it would likely never be included on an invitation. This level of dress is most comfortable and often just for relaxing at home!

Gentlemen & Ladies: jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts, sweat pants, athletic wear (ie: running shorts, exercise clothing, etc.) tennis shoes, flip flops

CASUAL (or Comfortable Casual or Sport Casual)

Gentlemen: Khakis, or nice jeans (clean, no holes, no distress) [remember no jeans in the country clubs]; polo or casual button-down-the-front shirt; sweaters; loafers, boat shoes, or tennis shoes.
*No sweatshirts, t-shirts, athletic wear (running shorts, football jerseys, etc..), flip flops or hiking boots.

Ladies: Khakis, jeans (clean, no holes, no distress) [remember no jeans in the country clubs], or casual fabric (cotton, seersucker, etc.) trousers; casual skirts; nice tee, polo, or casual shirt; sweaters; sandals, casual shoes, or tennis shoes.
*No sweatshirts, t-shirts, athletic wear (running shorts, yoga clothing, etc.) or flip flops.

 BUSINESS CASUAL

Gentlemen: seasonal sports coat or blazer; khakis or trousers; button-down-the-front shirt; no tie is necessary; loafers, boat shoes, socks required; 
*No jeans or tennis shoes.

Ladies: khakis or trousers (gabardine, wool, etc.); skirts; dresses (not too bare – no strapless, backless, spaghetti straps, etc.); shirts, tops, sweaters, sweater sets; 
*No jeans or tennis shoes.

INFORMAL (or Dressy Casual)

Gentlemen: seasonal sports coat or blazer; khakis or trousers; dress shirt; tie; dress shoes and dress socks  (not athletic socks – even if they are black!)

Ladies: Conservative dress; skirt and dressier top; sweaters. sweater sets; dress shoes – may wear flats; stockings optional.

BUSINESS (or Business Formal)

Gentlemen: dark business suit (matching vest optional); dress shirt; conservative tie; leather dress shoes with dark dress socks

Ladies: Suit, business-style dress, or dress with a jacket, heels; stockings required.

SEMIFORMAL

Gentlemen: dark business suit (matching vest optional); white dress shirt; conservative tie; leather dress shoes with dark dress socks. After six o’clock gentlemen may wear a ‘black tie’  tuxedo.

Ladies: Short (not too short!) afternoon or cocktail dress or long, dressy skirt and top.

BLACK TIE OPTIONAL

Gentlemen: follow black tie guidelines below or dark business suit; white shirt; dark conservative tie; leather dress shoes with dark socks.

Ladies: formal (floor length) evening dress, dressy cocktail dress or dressy separates..

BLACK TIE

Gentlemen: black tuxedo jacket, matching trousers; formal (pique’ or pleated front) white dress shirt; black bow tie; black cummerbund; dressy suspenders (optional); black patent dress shoes; black dress socks.

Contemporary definition includes: wing-collared shirts, colored and patterned neck ties, bow ties, and vests. White dinner jacket – for cruise or spring/summer.

Ladies: formal (floor length) evening dress, or dressy, cocktail dress.

WHITE TIE

Gentlemen: black tailcoat; matching trousers with a single stripe; white pique’ wing-collared shirt with stiff front; white vest; and white bow tie; white or dove gray gloves; black patent shoes and black dress socks.

Ladies: formal (floor length) ball gown, opera (over the elbow) gloves
